Photonic System Technologies:
(incuding Optic Communication, Optical Data Processing and Storage, Display Technology) This research program is designed to cultivate the system integration ability of the enrolled students.

The 21st century is an information-intensive era with omnipresent data flow. The technology of radio-over-fiber (RoF) communication offers a technological platform to meet the demand of omnipresent broadband information exchange. The optic communication group of DoP focuses on the development of access networking technology with recent achievements including a long-reach (over 100km) low-cost passive optical network (PON) and a world-record >60GHz high-fidelity RoF technology. To meet the ever-increasing demand of mobile communication, the future research direction of the group is to extend the RoF technology into tera-hertz data rate by cooperating with the fundamental research group in the coherent tera-hertz radiation research.
The omnipresent information flow will demand the support of high-density data storage and rapid 3D image display. The 3D holographic data storage and display group of DoP had been honored with SID best paper award for several times. The research achievements include a world-leading polymer-based holographic data storage technology, revealing a data storage capacity >420GB/disk and access speed >117Mb/sec, and a low power consumption eco-display technology with “Stencil-Field Sequential Color TFT LCD”.

The SFSC TFT LCD technology is based on a series of patent-pending techniques, including fast response optical compensated bending LC device, RGB LED backlight arrays module, human visual model, novel image driving algorithm and high-efficiency OLED, etc. These techniques can also form the base for the future 3D display, which can display high-quality 3D image in a flat thin panel.
