Introduction

Electro-optical engineering offers indispensable, enabling technologies for the Tera-info Society of the 21st century. Modern electro-optical research is uniquely characterized by its interdisciplinary nature across material, science, engineering and biomedicine. This interdisciplinary research could enable optical-science discoveries and stimulate technological innovation. One distinct example of the innovation is in the field of optical-display, which has become one of the trillion-dollar industries in Taiwan. It is also highly expected that the filed of solid-state-lighting and photovoltaic will continue to show a strong growth potential, due in part to global energy shortage.

Founded in 1980, the Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering is the first graduate institute of Photonics in Taiwan. For the past two decades, the Institute has graduated over one thousand students with Master or PhD degrees. These alumni have made outstanding contributions to Taiwan’s electro-optical industries. For example, over 80% of R&D researchers in established electro-optical companies in Taiwan, including AUO and CHIMEI, come from our institute. In 2004, based on a survey by Cheers Magazine, the Top 1000 corporations in Taiwan voted National Chiao-Tung University to be the best university in the field of “optoelectronics”.
