ECOC 2023 Tutorial - We.D.1.T Recent Advances and Future Perspectives in OWC, FSO Communication and Sensing
Optical wireless communication (OWC) is an emerging area where research and development are growing worldwide. This tutorial covers the recent advances and future perspectives in OWC, free-space-optical (FSO) communication and sensing, from devices to applications.
"Enabling Techniques for Optical Wireless Communication Systems," Invited Talk, M2F.1, OFC 2020
Optical wireless communication (OWC) has emerged as a complementary or alternative technology to radio-frequency (RF) communication since OWC can offer cost efficient and highly reliable access solutions for wireless communication and release the pressure on the highly congested traditional RF spectrum.
40.665 Gbit/s RGB VLC Transmission with 2 m Free Space Transmission
We demonstrated a VLC system at 40.665 Gbit/s using tricolor red, green and blue (RGB) laser diodes (LDs) and polarization multiplexing. The implementation included orthogonal frequency divsion multiplexing (OFDM) bit-loading, power-loading, and polarization multiplexing.
3D Visible-Light-Positioning (VLP) System using Machine Learning
We proposed and demonstrated a received-signal-strength (RSS) based visible-light-positioning (VLP) system using sigmoid function data preprocessing (SFDP) method; and applied it to two types of regression based machine learning algorithms; including the second-order linear regression machine learning (LRML) algorithm, and the kernel ridge regression machine learning (KRRML) algorithm. Experimental average positioning error of about 2 cm in both horizontal and vertical directions were achieved.
6.915 Gbit/s White-Light LD VLC and Indoor Lighting
We demonstrated a recorded single channel 6.915 Gbit/s white-light VLC. By optimizing the bit-loading algorithm onto the DCO-OFDM signal, high data rate can be achieved. The proposed white-light VLC system can provide both lighting and communication simultaneously with functional propagation distance.
Silicon Photonics
Silicon photonic technology allows a very high components miniaturization and integration. It is “CMOS-compatible”, meaning that it can be manufactured using standard CMOS fabrication process.
Our team has successfully developed and demonstrated 100 Gbit/s per wavelength DP-QPSK coherent transmission based on silicon photonic technology.
2.6 Tbit/s On-chip Silicon Photonic Optical Interconnect based on Mode-Division Multiplexing !!
We successfully developed and demonstrated a > 2.6 Tbit/s on-chip optical interconnect. This work has been selected to be IEEE Photonics Technology Letters as the Cover Page in May/June 2018 issue.
MOST FutureTech Demo and Breakthrough Award 2018 !!
We successfully demonstrated a SiPh cross-connect of the data center networks and network-on-chip. This work also received Taiwan government recognition with the MOST FutureTech Demo and Breakthrough Award (2018) 科技部未來科技突破獎 (Total 81 awards out of about 430 research teams of cross-discipline in Taiwan) in recognition of his research breakthroughs and promising technology for the future.
