About Us

Mission of International Ph.D. Program in Photonics

Facing the future competitive environment with globalization, our country has imperious demands to build up an international environment which can develop scientists and technicians with globalization. The establishment of University System of Taiwan (UST) International Ph.D. Program in Photonics (IPPP) will help with the work of setting up the international environment in Taiwan to develop Photonics scientists and technicians with globalization.

About University System of Taiwan

University system of Taiwan (UST) was established on January 24, 2008, to break through developmental and structural impasse obstructing creative integration of research personnel and resources in higher education in Taiwan. The UST aims to actively forge close communication and cooperation among the four top universities involved. They are National Chiao Tung University, National Tsing Hua University, National Central University, and National Yang Ming University.

In this era of globalization in industry and academics, UST strives to be committed to the campus internationalization in Taiwan. To fulfill this task, we are now integrating all international Ph.D. programs in Photonics, and aim to offer a complete range of services for all Ph.D. students from around the world.

Photonic Crystal

We take pride in offering quality Ph.D. degree program in the area of photonics, such as nanophotonics, green photonics, biophotonics, optics, display, solid state lighting, and so on, from the four top universities in Taiwan. Our mission is to equip international Ph.D. students with the knowledge and ability to become outstanding and highly competitive in today’s global job market. For every international student, we also provide comprehensive assistance and support in both academic studies and personal matters. As a liaison with administrative and academic departments among the four universities, our role is to assist international students to successfully achieve their educational goals. If you wish to be professional in Photonics and would like to explore Chinese language and cultures, the UST International Ph.D. Program in Photonics will be a perfect choice for you.

Photonics will play a key role in providing the enabling technology for the 21st century. With this vision in mind, the Department of Photonics (DoP) emphasizes innovative teaching and cutting-edge research programs in photonics for the new millennium.

NCTU has a long history of academic excellence in photonic science and technology. Many pioneering photonic programs in Taiwan, including gas laser, nctuVCSEL, holography, liquid crystal, MO storage, fiber communication, femto-second laser and THz photonics, were initiated in NCTU. The DoP was established in 2004. The graduate education arms of the DoP consist of the Institute of Electro-Optical Engineering (IEO, founded in 1980) and the Display Institute (DI, established in 2004), conferring M.S. and Ph.D. degrees. Both Institutes are the first institute of its kind in Taiwan.

The Institute of Biophotonics at National Yang-Ming University was established in 2002 as a key plan in Taiwan to catch up today’s fast evolving discipline of biophotonics. The Multi-disciplinary Biophotonics and Molecular Imaging Team at NYMU and Taipei Veteran General Hospital (TPVGH) has built up a comprehensive array of technological platforms including laser microscopy/nanoscopy & spectroscopy, laser tweezers, manipulators, & microsurgery, yanmainbiophotonics sensors, computational modeling, and a wide range of multimodality imaging platforms for pre-clinical & translational researches as well as clinical applications. Our contributions via active national and international research collaborations have achieved world-wide recognition. We are committed to provide a warm and friendly research and education environment with uncompromised academic standard to students.

The Institute of Photonics Technologies (IPT) started as one of the research clusters in the solid-state track under the Department of Electrical Engineering in 1984. Because of the booming photonics industry and the increasing demand for quality optical engineers, an optics track was, therefore, founded in 1998 to recruit its own graduate students. From 1999 to 2002, the number of applications grew from 190 to 590. To meet such an nthuincreasing demand, IPT was eventually established in 2003. Currently, IPT has 21 faculty members and more than 160 graduate students in various research areas, such as laser physics and engineering, integrated optics, optical storage, optical communication, optical information process,  semiconductor lasers ultrafast optics, quantum optics, silicon photonics, MEMS and nano-sensors biophotonics.

The Institute of Optical Sciences (IOS) was established under College of Science, National Central University in 1982. IOS started to offer Ph.D. program in 1987, recruiting students with a variety of backgrounds from optoelectronics, physics, electrical engineering, to material science. Since established, IOS has been devoting to the education, research, and technology developments, thus holding a high reputation in both academic research and industrial collaborations in Taiwan. With National Central Universitythe expansion of faculty members in recent years, our research now covers a wide variety of areas, including thin-film optics, optical information processing, optical engineering, optical design/testing, solid-state lighting, optoelectronic material/devices, solar cells, nonlinear/ultrafast optics, nano/micro-optics, integrated photonics, optical interconnects, photonic crystals, color sciences, and  laser.
